The Luftwaffe is one of the strongest, most doctrinally advanced, and most battle-experienced air forces in the world. Officially unveiled in 1935, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, its purpose was to support the Government's timetabled "Blitzkrieg" across Europe. Though seen by many as a strategic weapon, it is in fact regarded internally as a tactical force suited to campaigns in support of significant land power.
Its 'volunteers' in the Spanish Civil War showed the force had modern fighters and dive bombers, and the tactics they employed were considerably superior to all other air arms, should the comparison be made. The Luftwaffe is a large force with some 4000 planes and 400,000 men. Emblematic of German power, it is in a state of heightenned readiness though not fully mobilised.
