The Poseidonova Class Battleship was original built as a super tanker/freighter but when the Cylon Revolt, 12 of the 48 members class was conversion into a battleship to help fight the Cylon.
The Poseidonova Super Tanker/Freighter had service the colonies for years coming into service around 70 BTF, however by the time of the Cylon War they was an older design and was thought prefect for conversion because of the larger number. However during the conversion of the first block major design flaw was discover.
The Poseidonova Class Battleship is thought of as been a fail by the Colonial Fleet. The Poseidonova had several issues primary the mass ship of the ship when compare to the limited size of its engine. While this may had work for Super Tanker/freighter it was a problem for Battleship. Also It rotating section was prove gravity was a target by the Cylon each time they engage the Poseidonova and it sister ships.
The only two areas that the Poseidonova Class Battleship had an advange, the first been was it size of it air wings however because of it sole landing and takeoff bay one it was destroyed left the Poseidonova without the ablilty to launch and recover it air wings prove to be a major weakest.
The Poseidonova Class Battleship was used as a troop transport because it could carry larger number of troops however while it was great at the role it size was a traget for the Cylon and the need for escorts put stain on the already thin Colonial Fleet. By 50 BTF 10 of 12 conversion had already been lost and the remain two was going to scrapped for metal to built other warship. However, the last two was destroyed after resupplies Colonial troops on Caneron and Tauron.
Because of the fails of the Poseidonova Supreme Admiral Stryker wanted the Battlestar that came afterward would had at least two flight pods and launch tubes instead of normal takeoff and landing. This was done so that it air wings could be launch and recover easier and not had one center target. Stryker would later says, "What we learn from the Poseidonova would save many Battlestars during the Cylon War."
